Tornado moved for the first time 18 years ago today. The 50th Peppercorn class A1 was completed in Darlington after almost 18 years of work and at a cost of over £3m. Tornado was the first new main line steam locomotive to be competed in Britain for over 50 years and has gone on to become one of the UK’s most famous steam locomotives, appearing on BBC Top Gear and in Paddington 2.
