No. 4472 Flying Scotsman headed the northbound inaugural non-stop ‘Flying Scotsman’ from King’s Cross on 1 May 1928 and No. 2580 Shotover the southbound from Waverley. The non-stop journey of 392 miles was only possible because of the 10 corridor tenders originally fitted to selected class A1/A3 locomotives. Four more were built for the class A4s and all were subsequently transfered to them.
