Launch into Traffic of Gresley Class N2 No. 1744

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to celebrate the return to traffic of Gresley Class N2 No. 1744 at Sheringham Station on the North Norfolk Railway on Friday 17 July 2026.

This historic locomotive, the oldest surviving example to the design of Sir Nigel Gresley and the sole remaining Gresley tank engine, has undergone a comprehensive overhaul costing approaching £800,000.  Recent milestones include successful steaming on 12 May 2026 and passing the Part 2 Steam Examination on 20 May 2026.

Event Details:

  • Arrival: 11:30hrs at Sheringham Station, Station Approach, Sheringham, Norfolk NR26 8RA.  
  • Rededication Ceremony: 12:00hrs.  
  • Train Departure: 12:20hrs for a return trip to Holt arriving back at 13:40hrs.  
  • A second return trip departs at 14:10hrs, arriving back at 15:30hrs.

Gresley Society members will receive 50% off fares on Friday 17, Saturday 18, and Sunday 19 July 2026. Members have been sent an email where possible with the details of how to book and those without an email address on file will receive a letter shortly, including discount codes.

The North Norfolk Railway will host ‘The Golden Years’ event on 18–19 July, recreating the atmosphere of the 1960s–80s with vintage buses, live music, and displays. Supporters may also be interested in the ‘Festival on Rails 2026’ from 22–31 August, featuring No. 1744.
