As well as his impact on today’s railway, a number of Sir Nigel Gresley’s designs survive under preservation.

Class A3 BR No. 60103 (LNER No. 4472) Flying Scotsman: initially a preservation target of the Society, it is now part of the National Collection and operates on the main line.

Class A4 BR No. 60009 (LNER No. 4488) Union of South Africa: preserved by Society President John Cameron and after a long main line career is now preserved on his farm at Balbuthie in Fife.

Class A4 LNER No. 4489 (BR No. 60010) Dominion of Canada: preserved at the Exporail: the Canadian Railway Museum at Saint-Constant, Quebec, Canada.

Class A4 BR No. 60008 (LNER No. 4496) Dwight D. Eisenhower (formerly Golden Shuttle): preserved at the National Railroad Museum at Green Bay, Wisconsin, USA.

Class A4 BR No. 60007 (LNER No. 4498) Sir Nigel Gresleypreserved by the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust and currently operates on the main line.

Class A4 LNER 4464 (BR No. 60019) Bittern: preserved by Geoff Drury and now owned by Jeremy Hosking and under overhaul after a period operating on the main line.

Class A4 LNER No. 4468 (BR No. 60022) Mallard: world speed record holder and part of the National Collection at the National Railway Museum in York.

Class D49 LNER No. 246 (BR No. 62712) Morayshire: preserved by Ian Fraser, it is now owned by the National Museums of Scotland and undergoing overhaul on the Bo’ness and Kinneil Railway.

Class K4 BR No. 61994 (LNER No. 3442) The Great Marquesspreserved Viscount Garnock, now owned by Society President John Cameron and after a long main line career is now preserved on his farm at Balbuthie in Fife.

Class N2 GNR No. 1744 (LNER No. 4744/BR No. 69523): owned by the Society and currently based on the North Norfolk Railway.

Class V2 LNER No. 4771 (BR No. 60800) Green Arrow: part of the National Collection and after many years of main line operation is now on display at the Danum Museum, Doncaster.

Class B17: BR No. 61673 (LNER No. 2873) Spirit of Sandringhamnew build project by The B17 Steam Locomotive Trust based in Sheffield.

Class P2 LNER No. 2007 Prince of Wales: new build project launched in 2013 by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust based in Darlington.

Class V4 LNER No. 3403 Highlander: proposed new build project by The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust based in Darlington.

In addition, over 80 Gresley designed carriages survive in preservation, notably on the North Yorkshire Railway (courtesy of the LNER Coach Association), the Severn Valley Railway, and the North Norfolk Railway where full rakes of Gresley teak-bodied carriages operate, the latter being the sole surviving Quad-Art set frequently paired with No. 1744.

Other notable survivors include Buffet Lounge car No. 1852 owed by the Society and both beaver tail Observation Cars from ‘The Coronation’, with No. 1729 (formerly owned by the Society) restored to original condition by Jeremy Hosking and No. 1719 restored to its rebuilt condition by Railway Vehicle Preservations.
